Captain Climate supports the FOREST WEEK |

Captain Climate strongly supports the Forest Week
Captain Climate strongly encourages all the Young Greens to join the Forest Week and spread this clear message: NO FOREST - NO FUTURE. Forests are a key element in the fight against climate change, being a significant absorber of CO2. Yet forests and their fragile ecosystems are increasingly manaced by industrial and economic activities that fail to take into account any "post-materialistic" values such as sustainability.
Moreover, says Captain Climate, our excessively urbanized society tends to forget that forests have a highly symbolic value deeply rooted in all our cultures. From the Amazonian Woods up to the German Schwarzwald, forests are crying out for help... Nonetheless, for those still left, the tears are acid...

FYEG Action week against climate change all over Europe!
December 2007 was a month very connected to climate topics. During a few days, climate was one of the hot topics in the newspapers and magazines, and related news appeared often on TV, with special pages and documentaries devoted to the growing problem of the climate change. It must be acknowledged that this situation was encouraged on the previous months, due to the Nobel Peace Prize to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Eventually, ecological movements managed to echo our voices in putting this topic on the global agenda.
Indeed, there were favourable conditions for media attention to the UN Bali climate change conference, from December 3rd to 14th, in Indonesia. Besides, the last month of 2007 also hosted a symbolic day, December 11th, as it was the 10th anniversary of the signature of the Kyoto protocol. Obviously, when considering these two major events from a constructive critical point of view, they do not produce so much joy, as 10 years after the protocol was agreed, several very important countries have not accepted it, while others that have done that step are far from accomplishing the set targets. Concerning the Bali conference, during the whole process a lot of pessimism appeared, to a big extent due to the attitude of US, which seemed not to wish an agreement. And this behaviour made that when in the end an agreement was met, this had to be much below several of the necessary minimum standards.
Therefore, in this worrying, yet hopeful international context, FYEG could no stay aside from this reality, as a paneuropean organization which is concerned with the importance of climate change and the role Europe -and specially its youth- must play into alleviating its impact. In coherence with that, FYEG is running currently a campaign against climate change, and as part of it, it was considered that such a climate-related period deserved an Action week, with decentralized conferences, actions, concerts, and demonstrations all over Europe. Also, a former EC member and expert in Climate Change issues, Jiri Jerabek, was able to attend to Bali for the conference, and therefore FYEG was well represented there. But the most of the action was on the streets of the European cities, where thousands of young greens claimed for a global commitment against a global topic. This is how we did it in...

FYEG Press Release: High Time for Actions against Climate Change |

Latest News

On the occasion of the International Day for Fighting against Climate Change, the Young European Greens reiterate their commitment for the cause.
Marina Barbalata, Spokesperson of the Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) states: "In the middle of the discussions within the UN Conference on Climate in Bali, we hope that the demonstrations against climate change on December 8th will urge world leaders to commit to binding measures to counteract this great challenge that humanity has come to be confronted with. As the conference has started on a positive note, with Australia’s ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, we are now optimistic regarding the adoption of a "Bali mandate" that would bind countries to 25-40% reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. However, even with the adoption of such a mandate, more efforts are needed towards combating climate change. The worlds’ main polluters are still the ones that have not ratified any climate treaties. Thus, the focus should also be on including countries such as the US and China in the successor Treaty of the Kyoto protocol, at least from 2012 onwards. Furthermore, attention needs to be paid as well to how the planned reductions will be reached. Considering nuclear energy as a clean source of energy, which will help with the greenhouse emissions reduction does not represent the answer. Therefore, we expect from the Bali conference both a firm commitment to counteract climate change as well as a sustainable action plan to reach that goal."

At the start of the UN Climate Talks in Bali, the Federation of Young
European Greens (FYEG) is organizing a Europe-wide action
week against Climate Change. In more than 20 countries, Young Green
activists will draw attention this week to the greatest challenge
humankind faces in the 21st Century. Marc Gimenez,
Coordinator of the FYEG Climate Change Campaign comments: “The
Bali conference is of historic importance, as its outcomes determine
the fate of both this and future generations. However, there are many
obstacles to achieving a breakthrough in the negotiations-especially
a lack of political will among some bigger industrial countries.
Therefore, we think it is imperative to remind the world of the
stakes involved and the urgent need for radical measures to
drastically curb greenhouse gas emissions. The period of promises and
pledges is over: It is time for action”

Dear friends,
The moment we have long been waiting for is finally about to come: next week, the FYEG Action Week against Climate Change will burst out all over Europe.
This year, FYEG has launched its campaign against Climate Change, an urgent necessity given the scale of this pending disaster. And actually, the birth of this campaign could not have happened at a better moment. Indeed, the Peace Nobel Price awarded to people committed to the fight against Climate Change sets the topic on the front page of the actuality. However, all this rhetoric is not really backed up by concrete action from governments and the public at large. Therefore, it is high time to send a wake-up call to policy makers and people!
